Renewable Energy

Member utility staff who are logged in have full access to resources.

Choose Renewable

Member utilities offer customers the option of purchasing renewable energy through the Choose Renewable program. For two dollars per month, customers can purchase a 300kWh block of renewable energy—from clean and affordable resources like wind, solar and biogas. It only takes two or three blocks of renewable energy to power the average home every month. And, with no equipment to buy or install, there’s no need to worry about payback periods or annual maintenance costs.

Of course, renewable energy isn’t just good for the planet. It can also help control energy costs over the long haul. The money spent on renewable energy goes toward new, green energy alternatives that will help control local energy costs in the future. And because it is generated in the Midwest, renewable energy can help increase our energy independence. With Choose Renewable, we can make a difference.

DER Interconnection Resources

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in WPPI member communities are on a sharp increase. Due to this increase, WPPI assembled an internal team to review and extract best practices used during the interconnection process from member utilities experiencing the most activity. The result is the Distributed Energy Resources Interconnection Guidebook. Input from the utilities was crucial in the guidebook development and will continue to be crucial in the future. Our goal with this project was to learn from each other and document utility best practices so all members can be efficient in supporting distributed generation interconnections, particularly as the numbers increase.

DER interconnections touch many different departments at the local utility. The guidebook helps explain the various roles each team member has in order to make the process run smoothly. Adopting a consistent review process helps ensure all involved utility departments (engineering, metering, billing, and accounting) are informed of projects and that applications are handled in a consistent and efficient manner. This will help utilities with either frequent or infrequent interconnection application submittals. Through this guidebook, utilities will be prepared to process interconnection requests for customers and installers. Members are welcome to extract any pages of forms or diagrams from the guidebook and use them to meet their needs.

The DER Interconnection Training Video is a recording of the workshop held at WPPI on March 3, 2023. Timings for the various sections of the workshop are detailed below the video and the slides are available to download to accompany the on-demand video. This training is also available to be brought on-site to local member communities by request. To train an entire local DER Interconnection team at once, members may request a training session at the utility by filling out the training request online form.
