Honeywell A4 Meter Family: A New Era in Metering

We have performed system upgrades and meter testing and are ready to support the latest generation of Honeywell residential and commercial meters, the Honeywell A4 meter family. These advanced meters are now the recommended choice for all WPPI member utilities. When deploying A4 meters for the first time, please contact WPPI support staff for assistance in adding the proper meter types to NorthStar.

Key Features and Improvements

The Honeywell A4 meters have several enhancements designed to improve reliability and performance. WPPI has collaborated closely with Honeywell to address and resolve firmware issues that previously hindered communication in specific scenarios. All newly manufactured A4 meters now include updated firmware, allowing full communication capabilities.

Important Update for Existing Meters

For those utilizing A4 EA_LAN (non-cellular) residential meters manufactured before Oct. 18, upgrading the firmware is crucial for proper meter communications. Please coordinate with WPPI to develop a comprehensive plan for deploying and upgrading the firmware on these meters.

Consider Gatekeeper Replacements

As you prepare your 2025 and future budgets, we strongly recommend allocating funds to replace 10-year-old or older gatekeepers. Our data indicates a high failure rate among older gatekeepers, and we anticipate significantly improved performance from the next-generation models.
