National association names WPPI Energy president and CEO as board chair

An Update from WPPI

Mike Peters, the president and CEO of Sun Prairie, Wis.-based joint action agency WPPI Energy, was installed as the board chair of a national advocacy group July 1.

Peters took the helm for the board of directors during the American Public Power Association National Conference. APPA is a national services and advocacy organization representing the more than 2,000 towns and cities that own and operate not-for-profit, public power utilities throughout the country.

“I am honored to serve as APPA’s chair for the coming year,” Peters said. “After more than 40 years in this industry, I believe the thing that makes public power different is that we serve people and communities above all. Being part of this group that advocates for locally owned utilities is a rewarding experience and I’m proud to help lead those efforts.”

Peters was first elected to the APPA board in 2019 for a three-year term. He was elected to board vice chair in 2024 and served as chair-elect after being installed in 2025. Peters also currently serves as a member of APPA’s CEO Climate Change and Generation Policy Committee and the board’s Transmission Access Policy Study Group.

Since 2011, Peters has overseen WPPI’s organizational leadership, day-to-day operations and its strategic direction. His career in the community-owned utility industry began decades earlier, when he first started working for locally owned utilities as an attorney. Before joining WPPI, Peters was CEO of the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association for 16 years.

In addition to serving on APPA’s board, Peters lends his expertise in the electricity industry as a member of the American Transmission Co. Board of Directors.

Peters will serve as APPA board chair until June 2027.
